Welcome to Paynter Memorial School
The students of N/Paynter Memorial School takes their education with more difficulties and cold,misty,windy and shower of rainy climate.Today our school has taken a step to go on a new to journey (pilgrimage) with above difficulties by searching developments goal with great encouragement. As teachers our main aim is to mould a student by fulfilling the good knowledge,good attitude and skill .
The late Rev.Arnorld Paynter (Director of the Indian Christian mission) laid the Foundation of Paynter memorial school and the school was registered and officially opened in 1931.At the beginning school hours were from 8.00 a.m to 12 .00 p.m. Most of the practical subjects were done after school. Boys were taught carpentry while the girls learned to cook and sew. Scouting too had been started. The school made a good progress in all the extra- curricular activities.
Although the school was originally meant for children of mixed European and Ceylonese parents, later day students were admitted and it was made a high school to enter the children for the senior school learning certificate in 1946.The first O/L class in the school was in 1948 and the school had around 50 children. In 1955 the name of the school was change to paynter memorial school. At the end of 1959 there were 152 children. The school was taken over by the government in1960.
A junior Red Cross Society was formed in the school.A Parent Teacher association and a Past-Pupils Association was formed too.By that time there had been Girl guides, Scouts, Little friends actively, taking part in their due activities at school.There after the students took part in school competitions and won places.
In 1969 the school got all the 1 st places in the English stream at the Regional English Day. Children took part in the All Island English Contest and they got five third places and one 1st place in group singing. After a period of twelve years since the take over of the school by the state, a Prize Giving Day was held in 1973. The chief guest was Mr. J.W. Daniel, representative of the British Council.
In 1974 Kandyan dancing was introduced as a subject four aesthetic studies. Grade 1,2,3 and 4 were worked in the Sinhala stream. In 1979 there were 17 teachers on the staff and the school was given both a western and eastern band by the Education Department.
